Young Speakers Compete at County/District Level
On April 21, 2009, area students competed in the county/district speech contest
sponsored by Modern Woodmen of America, a national provider of fraternal
financial services and programs. The contest was held at the White Lake school
which was the first time for the contest to be hosted here. Eight local schools
were represented at the contest and they were; Mt. Vernon, Stickney, Plankinton,
White Lake, Kimball, DC, Burke and Miller.
Prior to the contest, the students had already won first, second or third place
in their local school’s speech contest. They shared their presentations on this
year’s topic, A person who has touched many lives. The student’s person of
choice ranged from the famous, Martin Luther and Mother Theresa, to those only
known locally, such as a mother and a school principle. The first place winner,
Tia Pawlowski, a 5th grade student from Miller, SD, won a $50 cash
award and a trophy. Her school will also receive an engraved trophy. Second
place winner Rose Konechne, an 8th grade student from White Lake and
third place winner Colin Geppert, a 7th grade student from Kimball,
also received trophies. These students are now invited to compete at the state
level on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at Oacoma.
